Luxor from Hurghada

Hurghada to Luxor by road or by plane

About 290 km through the desert. Every tour drives it; a flight only works if you travel on your own.

The short answer

Go by road: every Luxor tour on sale from Hurghada drives, in a van, a coach or a private car, about 4 to 5 hours each way. No tour flies, and the tours from Hurghada that use a plane go to Cairo.

Flight-search sites list a short Air Cairo flight to Luxor on some days of the week, but they disagree on how often it runs. If you want to fly, check the schedule with the airline and plan a tour that starts in Luxor.

Why the tours drive

On 2 November 2026 every day trip in the Hurghada to Luxor category on GetYourGuide went by road, and the category of plane tours from Hurghada held only trips to Cairo. A tour by road picks you up at your hotel and needs no airport transfers or check-in. A day by plane would need a very early flight, a flight back in the evening and a guide waiting in Luxor, and none of the operators here sells that.

The road has its own drawbacks. The German Federal Foreign Office warns of a very high risk of road accidents in Egypt and advises against driving at night; the UK Foreign Office advises against driving outside towns and resorts after dark. Book Tour Egypt adds that convoy schedules, checkpoints or fog can make the drive longer.

Flights from Hurghada to Luxor

Sources disagree. Flight-search sites checked on 3 November 2026 list a direct Air Cairo flight of roughly an hour, but give anything from four flights a week to one a day, and some older travel guides say there is no direct flight at all. Departure times listed range from early morning to late at night. Do not plan a day trip around it; if you want to fly, check the current schedule with Air Cairo, book a night in Luxor and choose a tour that starts there. Tours from Luxor are not compared on this site.

If what you want is a trip by plane rather than Luxor in particular, the tours that fly from Hurghada go to Cairo and the pyramids: Cairo by plane from Hurghada.

The public bus

Go Bus runs between Hurghada and Luxor, according to bus booking sites. They list several departures a day and about 4 hours on the road, but one site gives 7 hours and one passenger reports 6. Check the timetable with Go Bus before you rely on it. The bus gets you to Luxor; for the West Bank and the Valley of the Kings you then need a taxi, a guide or a tour from Luxor.

Coach, van or two days

On the road, the choice is the vehicle. The big-bus tours promise a coach, on Ranco Travel's tour with a toilet on board, but both say a smaller vehicle may be used when few people book. The vans take groups of up to 12 to 15. If 8 to 10 hours of driving in one day sounds like too much, a two-day tour splits it with a night in a Luxor hotel.

Further from the Red Sea

Some visitors combine a stay on the Red Sea coast with Petra and Wadi Rum in Jordan. Tours and travel times are on petrawadirum.com.

What guests say about the drive

Reviews from the booking pages, each under the tour it was written for. On the big-bus tour by Ranco Travel one guest reports almost seven hours each way and pressure from staff to give five stars; another describes a smooth, punctual drive. Several guests on the van tour recommend a pillow and something to read.

“Everything was right on time without any unnecessary stops. The bus journey was extremely comfortable, with air conditioning and free water provided. The ride was fast and smooth. All the attractions were fantastic, and our tour guide was highly experienced and spoke excellent English. Highly recommended!”
Michal · United Kingdom · November 2026 Day trip by big bus, Ranco Travel
“Pickup was 03:15 from my hotel in Hurghada and we reached Karnak just before 10:00, almost 7 hours instead of the 4.5 promised. Only 30 minutes there were guided, not 2 hours, and the guide pushed his own necklaces. […] an alabaster sales stop, and 15 rushed minutes at Hatshepsut. The ride back took 7 hours (16:30 to 23:30). Why are the reviews so high? At lunch staff watched over our shoulders as we wrote reviews, saying "the driver will get fired if you give less than 5 stars." […] To be fair, entry tickets were sorted with no queues, and they apologized for a police escort delay. That doesn't explain 14 hours on a bus. I wouldn't recommend them.”
Verified traveller · Sweden · November 2026 Day trip by big bus, Ranco Travel
“The temples and historical sites were impressive, and it was a great opportunity to learn more about ancient Egypt. The trip was quite long, but overall everything was good and we enjoyed the experience. Definitely worth it if you want to explore Egypt’s history! […]”
Brygida · Poland · October 2026 Day trip by big bus, Ranco Travel
“Amazing day trip to the most important archeologic sites in Luxor! […] Don't bother about tickets, but choose what extra fee-tomb you want (In my opinion, Ramses V & VI are giving much more value than Tutankhamun!), lovely dinner by the Nile with boat tour. Stop at authentic alabaster workshop to learn about this technice an maybe buy a souvenir. […] Tipp: Get a travel pillow and a book on the van, it's a long drive through the desert without signal.”
Friedrich · Austria · October 2026 Day trip, small group, Ranco Travel
“Taken to tourist traps for mulitple bathroom breaks for unneccessary lengths of time there and back (30-40 min), extending an incredibly long day in the heat and crammed into a van. guide did not take us into exhibits and explain the sites. Some quick introductions only.”
